Laptop won't turn on — what to check before you bring it in

You press Power and nothing happens — or the fan spins with a black screen? Don’t hold the button for five minutes. Split: no power vs no image vs stuck at logo.

1. Power, or just the display?

  • Charger / MagSafe / chassis LED: if a known-good charger shows nothing, see the charging guide.
  • Fan/keyboard lights, black panel: display, cable or GPU — not automatically a dead board.
  • Beep / diagnostic LED (Dell/HP/Lenovo): note the pattern.
  • Intel MacBook: SMC reset. Apple Silicon: hold Power ~10s, then boot.
  • Windows: brand boot keys if it reaches a logo then dies.

2. Home tests

  • Another original charger with enough USB-C PD wattage.
  • Unplug USB, HDMI, dock — a shorted dongle can block boot.
  • Removable battery (rare): try charger only.
  • After liquid or a drop: stop powering on. See the liquid guide.

3. What NOT to do

  • Don’t hold Power for minutes.
  • Don’t buy a battery first if the charge LED never lights.
  • Don’t open a glued MacBook from a generic video.
  • Don’t ignore a burnt smell or a scorching DC jack.

4. When to book diagnostics

  • We split power, display, SSD/boot and board.
  • Dell BIOS password before Windows: dedicated unlock page (owner only).
  • Estimate after inspection. WhatsApp: model + which LEDs + liquid/drop history.

Partial power. Try another cable; if it stays — port or board rail.

Replace the SSD if Windows won’t boot?

Only after board and RAM check out. Sometimes it’s just the bootloader.
