Laptop won’t charge? Check the charger (wattage / LED), DC or USB-C jack, MagSafe and cable before replacing the board. Signs: must hold the plug, loose jack, weak charging. Diagnosis at NEXX GSM, Bucharest — estimate after inspection.
1. Quick tests (2–3 minutes)
- Try another wall outlet / power strip — some strips have a weak contact or a switch left off.
- Another USB-C cable (if applicable) and, ideally, another charger of the same type (USB-C PD / MagSafe / DC jack) with enough wattage.
- Watch the charger LED (if any): off, blinking, orange/green — note behaviour with and without the laptop plugged in.
- If it boots on battery but “doesn’t see” charging on AC: more likely cable / port / charging circuit than the screen.
- Note: plug must be held, only one USB-C orientation works, socket gets hot, sparks, burnt smell.
2. Laptop port — lint and debris
- Laptop off (ideally), unplugged: good light into USB-C, MagSafe or the round DC jack.
- Lint, dust, grit and pocket fluff lift the plug — weak contact, intermittent charging.
- Gentle clean: wooden / plastic pick or a dry soft brush. Pull debris out — don’t push it in.
- Short bursts of compressed air from a distance. No liquids poured into the port.
- No metal needles, knives or screwdrivers — you can scratch contacts or short them (especially a DC jack with a centre pin).
- On a DC jack: check if the socket is loose in the chassis (moves when you tug the cable) — sign of a resolder / port replacement.
3. Cable tip / plug — dirt and wear
- USB-C: bent pins, dirt on the plug, oxidation, cracked shell.
- MagSafe: spots on the magnet / contacts, cable fraying near the plug, LED blinking for no reason.
- DC jack (older Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.): bent centre pin, melted insulation, plug that won’t seat fully.
- Wipe dry; light oxidation — cloth barely damp with isopropyl alcohol, then dry fully.
- Melted, deformed or burnt-smelling plug — stop using it; it can kill the laptop port.
4. Cable and charger: bends, wattage, heat
- Near the plug (daily bend zone): cracked jacket, visible wires, soft “knot” — replace the cable.
- Cable / brick gets very hot, sparks or smells — stop immediately.
- Wattage: an undersized USB-C charger may charge slowly, not at all under load, or only hold the battery. Check W on the brick and the laptop (or label).
- Don’t bend the cable at 90° under the laptop / over a desk edge; leave a wide loop.
- Cheap no-name chargers: unstable voltage, intermittent charging, risk to port and battery.
5. MacBook: MagSafe vs USB-C
- MagSafe: LED should light with a good contact. Blinking / off with a known-good brick → MagSafe cable, port or SMC / power path.
- USB-C on Mac: try both ports; some models prefer one port for faster charging.
- After power issues on Intel: see also the SMC / key-combo guide — an SMC reset sometimes helps.

FAQ6
Runs on battery but won't charge?
Usually cable, port, wrong charger or charging circuit — not the screen. Try another brick + cable with enough wattage.
Does USB-C wattage matter?
Yes. An undersized brick may charge slowly or not under load.
MagSafe blinking?
Weak contact, bad MagSafe cable, port or power path. Try another cable/brick.
Can I clean USB-C myself?
Yes, gently, no metal or poured liquids. If still intermittent, port may be worn.
Board replacement needed?
Not always — often port, cable or battery. We assess after inspection.
When to visit NEXX GSM
- Port is loose, cable falls out, DC jack moves in the chassis.
- After cleaning / another charger it still won’t charge, or the socket area gets very hot.
- Liquid history, short, drop on the corner with the jack, or original brick “dead” (LED off on any outlet).
We check the port (USB-C / MagSafe / DC), wiring, charging circuit, battery and (where relevant) SMC. Estimate on request; exact cost after inspection.
