MacBook battery not charging: programming, repair or replacement?

A MacBook battery that will not charge should not be replaced by guesswork. The cause may be the adapter, cable, port, charging management, battery controller (BMS), worn cells or the logic-board charging circuit.

In this guide

Safe checks before service

  • Use an adapter and cable with enough wattage for the model; a weak source can power the Mac without charging it.
  • Check System Settings → Battery → Battery Health for Normal or Service Recommended.
  • In System Information → Power, note Cycle Count, Condition and Full Charge Capacity.
  • If charging pauses near 80%, check Optimized Battery Charging before assuming a fault.
  • An SMC reset can help on an Intel MacBook; Apple silicon has no manual SMC reset.

Apple explains “Service Recommended” in its battery-health guide and lists causes for a battery that will not charge.

What NEXX GSM checks

  • Actual USB-C/MagSafe power and behaviour with a known-good adapter.
  • Battery data in macOS, diagnostic errors and BMS communication.
  • Pack voltage, cell balance, temperature and current — without asking the customer to open the battery.
  • Ports, charging rails and the logic board when the battery is not the cause.

When a programmer can help

On compatible packs, when the cells remain stable and the problem is controller data or communication after service, dedicated equipment can diagnose and restore BMS operation. We do not falsify cycle counts to hide wear and do not try to revive damaged cells.

When the battery must be replaced

  • It is swollen, deformed, abnormally hot, or pushing the trackpad or case.
  • The cells are worn, imbalanced or no longer store energy safely.
  • The Mac shuts down unexpectedly, runtime is very short, or Service Recommended remains after charger and software checks.
  • Useful capacity has dropped substantially; Apple recommends replacement at the model’s maximum cycle count for best performance.

The limit varies by model; see Apple’s official MacBook cycle-count table.

Diagnose before ordering a part

Send the exact model (Axxxx or the year/model from About This Mac), battery condition and symptom. We will confirm whether BMS/controller diagnostics or full replacement makes sense.

Check your device generation too

Your model determines the charging port, suitable adapter and restart steps. Do not use Intel reset steps on an Apple-chip Mac. MacBook 2020–2026 models and guides.

Check the generation’s charging path

On MacBook Air M1–M5, M1 charges through USB-C, while M2–M5 add MagSafe 3 and retain charging through the USB-C ports. The 2026 MacBook Neo has two USB-C ports that accept charging, but only its USB 3 port also supports DisplayPort. Test the function the port is designed for before concluding that the battery has failed.

Still having the problem?

FAQ3
Can a MacBook battery be repaired with a programmer?

Sometimes, only when the cells are healthy and the fault is controller data or communication. Worn, imbalanced or swollen cells require replacement.

Does Service Recommended mean immediate replacement?

Not always an emergency, but it indicates reduced capacity or abnormal operation. If runtime affects use, diagnose and usually replace the battery.

The Mac works on power but stays at 1%. What is wrong?

It can be the battery, BMS, insufficient adapter or charging circuit. Testing separates these before a part is ordered.
