MacBook — key combinations, SMC and NVRAM

When a MacBook won’t start, stays black or hangs at boot, key combinations often help without parts. Steps differ for Intel vs Apple Silicon (M1 and later).

1. Apple Silicon (M1 and later)

• Fully shut down (hold power ~10 seconds until off).
• Hold the power button until startup options appear (volumes / Options).
• Select the system disk and Continue — or Options for Recovery.
• Safe Mode: at startup screen hold Shift, select the disk, Continue in Safe Mode.
• On Apple Silicon the SMC resets automatically when you shut down — there is no (and no need for a) manual “SMC reset”. Do not treat a long power press as an SMC substitute.

2. SMC reset — Intel MacBook with T2 chip

• Shut down the MacBook (not just sleep).
• Hold Control (left) + Option (left) + Shift (right) for 7 seconds.
• Keep holding those keys and also press Power; hold all for another ~7 seconds, then release.
• Wait a few seconds, then press Power to turn on.

2b. SMC reset — Intel without T2 (built-in battery)

• Shut down the MacBook.
• Hold Shift + Control + Option (all on the left) + Power together for ~10 seconds.
• Release all keys, wait a few seconds, then press Power to turn on.
• Older removable-battery models: remove battery, hold Power 5 seconds, reinsert, power on.

3. NVRAM / PRAM reset (Intel)

• Power on and immediately hold Option + Command + P + R.
• Hold ~20 seconds (or until you hear the startup chime twice, on models that have it).
• Release and let it boot.
• Useful for wrong volume/display, wrong boot disk, resolution or timezone issues.

4. Other useful combinations

• Recovery (Intel): Command + R at startup.
• Internet Recovery: Option + Command + R.
• Startup Manager: Option at startup (Intel).
• Safe Mode (Intel): Shift right after power-on.
• Verbose: Command + V. Single-user (legacy): Command + S.
