A MacBook that remains black after opening the lid is not always “dead”. If Caps Lock, sound or an external display still works, the Mac may be awake while the built-in display, backlight or WindowServer has failed to return. macOS Tahoe 26 users have reported this pattern, but drops, liquid and display-cable faults can look the same.
In this guide
1. First separate no display from no power
- Press Caps Lock once and listen for sound or fan activity. A response suggests the Mac is running.
- Connect power and remove every hub, drive, dongle and external monitor.
- Increase brightness and shine a flashlight at the screen. A very faint image can point to backlight rather than macOS.
- If available, test one known-good external display directly. External video working does not prove the internal display is healthy.
2. Safe software checks
- Hold the power or Touch ID button for up to 10 seconds, wait, then start normally once.
- Install the latest stable macOS update if the Mac becomes usable again.
- Try Safe Mode. On Apple silicon, hold power to Startup Options, select the disk, hold Shift and choose Continue in Safe Mode. On Intel, hold Shift during startup.
- If the blank screen persists, start macOS Recovery and use Disk Utility First Aid. Reinstall macOS from Recovery only after understanding backup and data risks.
Apple’s official sequence: Mac starts up to a blank screen.
3. Run the display diagnostic in Tahoe 26
On Apple silicon, shut down, hold the power button until Options appears, then hold Command-D. On Intel, start while holding D. In macOS Tahoe 26 and later, Apple Diagnostics can offer a specific built-in display test. Save the reference code; a clean result does not rule out every intermittent cable or backlight fault.
4. What the 2026 forum pattern tells us
A large Apple Community discussion reports screens that stopped waking after the upgrade to macOS Tahoe while the keyboard still responded. That makes software a credible first check, not a diagnosis. Apple’s support documentation still advises Recovery, Disk Utility, reinstalling macOS when appropriate, and service if the blank screen continues.
5. Signs it is more likely hardware
- The screen changes when the lid angle moves, flashes, shows lines or has uneven backlight.
- The Mac was dropped, exposed to liquid or recently had a screen/battery repair.
- The internal screen is black in Startup Options, Recovery and Apple Diagnostics as well as normal macOS.
- Neither internal nor external video works and the Mac cannot reach Recovery.

Match the display test to the model
For a MacBook Air M1–M5 or a 14- or 16-inch MacBook Pro, record the year and chip before testing the external monitor, ports and internal display. Working external video is a useful clue, but it does not rule out a cable, backlight, lid-sensor or board fault.

FAQ4
Is the Tahoe black-screen problem always software?
No. The forum pattern makes software plausible, but display, backlight, lid-sensor, flex-cable and logic-board faults can show the same symptom.
Should I reset SMC on an M1, M2, M3, M4 or newer Mac?
No manual SMC reset exists for Apple silicon. Shut down and restart. SMC key sequences apply only to specific Intel models.
Does reinstalling macOS erase files?
A standard reinstall from Recovery is intended to keep files, but any failing system carries risk. Back up first whenever the Mac is accessible.
Can Apple Diagnostics prove the display is good?
It can identify certain hardware faults and provides useful reference codes, but intermittent flex, lid-angle and backlight problems may still need physical testing.
