This guide covers only the 13-inch M1 (2020) and M2 (2022) MacBook Pro. Two Intel 13-inch Pros also appeared in 2020, so “2020 Pro 13” is not enough identification. Apple separates them in its official MacBook Pro list. About This Mac shows “Chip” for M1 or M2 and “Processor” for Intel.

Information that makes diagnosis useful
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, M2, 2022)
Send the full model name, introduction year, visible memory/storage details and exact symptom. Note whether both ports charge, whether the Touch Bar responds, whether an external display works, and whether the fault followed an update, impact or spill. A part should not be ordered from case appearance alone.
Before testing: when to stop
If the battery is swollen, the screen is lifting, one area becomes unusually hot or there are signs of liquid, do not charge or keep trying to power on. Turn the device off if you can do so safely and arrange an inspection. Do not press a lifted screen or touch loose glass.
Startup and charging without the wrong resets
Remove hubs and accessories, test a suitable USB-C source, and hold Power/Touch ID for about 10 seconds. These are Apple-silicon Macs and have no manual SMC reset. For suspected hardware, Apple Diagnostics starts from startup options with Command-D. We test the cable, ports, battery and board power circuit separately before recommending a part.
Display, Touch Bar, keyboard and heat
- With a black screen, sound, trackpad response and external video help distinguish display from startup faults.
- Touch Bar and keyboard areas are tested individually and for liquid evidence; one bad key does not automatically mean a bad board.
- For heat, software load, sensors and internal condition are checked; one temperature reading is not a diagnosis.
- A swollen battery requires shutdown and safe replacement, not calibration or pressure on the case.
Firmware, liquid and data
After liquid, shut down and do not attach power; avoid rice, heat and repeated startups. For a rare firmware issue, Apple documents revive before restore: revive does not erase, restore does. If files matter, do not approve restore, erasure or reinstallation before assessment, and back up when the machine is stable. There is no universal storage-upgrade or transfer promise. Revive is not a backup: an existing board or storage fault can still put files at risk. If the data is your priority, tell us before any work.

FAQ3
Does the M1 13-inch MacBook Pro have an SMC reset?
No. Neither M1 nor M2 has a manual SMC reset; that procedure is for Intel.
Does a firmware restore preserve files?
No. Apple states that restore erases the Mac. Revive is the non-erasing attempt used first when appropriate.
Do you replace the battery whenever it will not charge?
Not by guesswork. The source, cable, ports, battery data and board are tested before confirming a part.
