What Dell BIOS Recovery does
BIOS Recovery attempts to restore valid firmware after corruption or a failed update. Dell documents hard-drive and USB methods for supported models. It is not a password-recovery method, and recovery is not available or successful on every model or failure state.
Loading BIOS defaults is a third, different action
Loading default settings resets configuration such as boot options or device settings. It should not be expected to remove a System, Admin or HDD/SSD password, and it does not repair corrupted firmware.
What BIOS password recovery does
A System password controls power-on access; an Admin/Setup password controls changes in F2; an HDD/SSD password protects the drive and may affect data access. These are separate from a Windows password or PIN and from the BitLocker recovery key. The exact prompt determines the correct path.
Limits to password recovery
When Master Password Lockout was enabled before a password was lost, Dell states that recovery-password support is disabled; recovery can therefore be unavailable. Drive-password options also vary, and Dell does not create release codes for NVMe SSD passwords. In some cases the remaining repair path is replacement of the locked motherboard or drive.
Important before attempting firmware recovery
- Use the recovery image for the exact Dell model.
- Locate the BitLocker recovery key first; a firmware change can trigger its recovery screen.
- Do not interrupt power during a BIOS recovery or update.
- If the computer simply asks for a password, do not start firmware recovery expecting it to remove authentication.

FAQ2
Does Ctrl + Esc remove a Dell BIOS password?
No. Ctrl + Esc starts BIOS firmware recovery on supported systems; it is not a password reset.
Does BIOS Recovery erase Windows?
BIOS Recovery targets firmware rather than Windows data, but prepare a backup when possible and locate the BitLocker recovery key before changing firmware.
