Does the screen actually ask for an Admin password?
Dell Admin or System password: which one is the screen asking for?
On your own device, enter Setup with F2 and read the prompt without changing settings. Labels such as Admin Password, Setup Password, Locked or Unlock Setup can help describe what you see; wording varies by model. A request before Windows may instead protect startup. Follow the password-type guide if the screen is unclear.
A grey or missing option can have another explanation
Dell Pro: check the exact model and its manual
Record the option name, model and BIOS version. Some options depend on installed hardware, another setting or the menu view. For example, the Dell Pro 14 Plus PB14250 manual documents an Advanced Setup view for some options. Opening that view is not password recovery. For a work laptop, ask IT which changes are permitted.
Start with the setting you need, not a factory reset
- USB boot: a missing USB device in the boot list does not by itself show that an Admin password is blocking it. Check the media and the model manual.
- Virtualization: note the exact option you need and its present state. Do not assume a BIOS password service will fix an application error.
- Secure Boot: do not disable it just to test whether the BIOS is locked. Describe the intended change and ask for model-specific guidance.
Two lockout settings have different meanings
Admin Setup Lockout can require the Admin password even to view Setup. Master Password Lockout controls the recovery-password feature on models that provide it. Neither state can be diagnosed from a grey option or suffix alone. Do not clear TPM, reset storage settings or flash an unknown BIOS file to experiment: startup and encrypted data can be affected.
When the online Admin check is the right next step
If the device is yours or you have written permission, and the prompt is for Admin/Setup, use the complete code shown on that screen. The free check recognizes the code format and shows the offer; it does not test the laptop. NEXX does not handle System/startup, HDD/SSD, Windows or BitLocker passwords. If no full code appears, contact the owner, authorized IT team or Dell before ordering.

FAQ3
Can Windows work while BIOS settings remain protected?
Yes. Access to Windows and permission to modify BIOS settings are different. A working Windows session is not proof that Setup is unprotected.
Does every grey BIOS option mean a password is set?
No. Hardware, related settings and menu visibility can also matter. Check the exact option in the correct model manual.
Will reinstalling Windows remove the Admin BIOS password?
Do not use a Windows reinstall as an Admin-password recovery method. It can remove useful data without addressing the protected BIOS settings.
