Looking to recover data from a broken phone or photos from a cracked display? Odds depend on memory, encryption and what you already tried. Don’t format or reinstall “to fix it” — back up / clone first. Below: phone, laptop, PC, HDD/SSD.
1. Shared rules — what NOT to do
- Don’t format, delete partitions or reinstall Windows / macOS / Android “to fix it” before a backup or clone.
- Don’t write to the drive (installs, downloads, “repair” tools that write) — you may overwrite the files you want.
- Don’t leave a clicking / scraping HDD running for hours — power it off and bring it in.
- Don’t open a phone / laptop with improvised tools without experience — risk to the board, flexes, battery.
- Don’t expect “100% recovery” — it depends on memory condition, encryption and physical damage. At NEXX we assess feasibility first.
2. Phone (iPhone / Android)
- Cracked screen but the phone boots: we can often read data via cable / a service screen — don’t mash touch on broken glass.
- Won’t boot after a drop / liquid: don’t keep plugging in “to check”; stop and bring it in — oxidation and shorts get worse.
- Passcode / Face ID / PIN: without unlock or a known cloud backup, logical recovery is limited on modern encrypted devices.
- Don’t factory-reset “to clean it” — that erases the data you want back.
- Backup: if it still boots, back up now (iCloud / Google / cable) before any risky repair.
3. Laptop and PC (Windows / Mac)
- Laptop / PC boots but Windows is corrupt: don’t reinstall over the disk without a clone / image — copy important files to a USB/external drive first.
- Won’t boot (black screen, loop, BSOD): try Boot Menu / Safe Mode (see the key guides) — if you reach files, copy them before formatting.
- After liquid: don’t keep powering on; data may still be intact on the SSD/HDD — see also “laptop after liquid”.
- Mac: FileVault on → without the password / recovery key, the disk is encrypted; hardware repair won’t magically unlock it.
- Desktop PC: you can remove the HDD/SSD and read it on another PC (USB adapter) — safer than reinstalling on the same drive.
4. HDD and SSD (external or from a laptop/PC)
- HDD: clicks, scraping noise, intermittent vanish → power off now; sector-by-sector clone before any “repair” software.
- SSD: not detected, bad SMART, dropouts → avoid writes; diagnose + image to a healthy drive.
- External drive: try another cable / USB port / PC — often the cable or enclosure, not the platter.
- Don’t open an HDD outside a cleanroom — dust on platters kills the odds.
- RAID / NAS: don’t rebuild “at random” if you don’t know disk order — label them and bring the whole set.
5. When chances are better
- The device boots but the screen / keyboard / OS blocks access — memory is still readable.
- Damage is to power / port / display, not the memory chip.
- HDD with bad sectors but still partly readable — quick clone.
- You have the password / decryption key / a partial cloud backup — more options.
6. When chances drop sharply
- Format / reinstall / wipe after the problem.
- Phone / SSD with encryption and no PIN / password / recovery key.
- Burned memory, cracked chip, aggressive liquid on NAND, heavily scored HDD platters.
- Repeated power-on attempts on a dying drive.
7. When to book diagnostics
- We assess the device type (phone, laptop, PC, HDD/SSD) and feasibility before promising results.
- Priority: stop damage + clone / read — not “fix the OS on the same disk”.
- Diagnostics, limits and confidentiality are in the Terms and Privacy.
Bring the device (and charger / drive set if relevant). Estimate on request; exact cost after inspection.

FAQ5
Can I recover photos with a cracked display?
Often yes if the phone boots and memory is intact — via cable, cloud if enabled, or a temp service screen. Depends on model, passcode and whether a PC sees the phone.
Phone dead — any data left?
Sometimes if memory/board are OK but power/display block access — needs diagnostics. Not guaranteed.
How long does recovery take?
Depends on type and device condition. We communicate after assessment — no invented SLA.
Locked phone with passcode?
Without passcode / cloud backup, options are very limited on modern encrypted devices.
Does recovery erase the phone?
Reading/cloning normally doesn't; risky repairs or resets can — backup/clone first.
