Phone won't turn on / won't boot: safe steps before a repair shop

Phone won’t turn on or black screen? Don’t assume a dead board. Check charging, force restart (iPhone: see iPhone restart guide), then whether it’s power, display or memory.

1. Quick checks

  • Leave 20–30 min on a good charger — a fully flat battery looks “dead”.
  • iPhone: force restart — see iPhone restart / diagnostic guide.
  • Android: hold Power 15–30 sec or Power + Volume Down.
  • Listen for vibration / ring on test call — black screen but response = maybe display only.
  • If it gets very hot on cable — stop and don't keep rebooting.

2. When it's battery, screen, board or software

  • Flat / degraded battery: nothing, no vibration — long charge or battery.

  • Board / liquid / drop: no response, burnt smell, after water — see liquid guide.
  • Software lock: boot loop — force restart or recovery mode.
  • Important data: intermittent boot — back up now; see data recovery.

3. What NOT to do

  • Don't hold Power for hours — overheats the board.
  • Don't open the phone at home without experience.
  • Don't keep charging a very hot phone.
  • Don't factory reset first — you may lose recoverable data.
  • Don't assume “dead board” without power and display tests.
