Phone won’t charge: causes, quick tests and when the port must be replaced

Phone won’t charge anymore? Don’t replace the battery first. Check the cable, charger, clean the charging port, and note bad-port signs (must hold the cable, charges a few seconds, drains on the wire). Then you’ll know if it’s dirt, the port or the board.

1. Quick tests (2 minutes)

  • Try another cable and charger (ideally original / certified). One bad cable fools the diagnosis.
  • Try a wall outlet, not only a PC USB port — some PC ports supply weak current.
  • If you have wireless (or MagSafe): if wireless works, the issue is more likely cable / port, not necessarily the battery.
  • Note: charges only one way, needs the cable held, socket gets hot, “Accessory not supported” / “Liquid Detected”.

2. Phone port — lint and debris

  • With the phone off (ideally) and unplugged: look into the port with good light (USB-C or Lightning).
  • Lint, dust and grit lift the plug — it never fully seats; it feels like you must press hard.
  • Gentle clean: wooden / plastic pick or a dry soft brush. Pull debris out — don’t push it deeper.
  • Short bursts of compressed air from a distance — no liquids or oils into the port.
  • Don’t use metal needles, knives or screwdrivers: you can scratch contacts or short them.
  • Don’t pour alcohol / “contact cleaner” into the port without experience — liquid can reach the board.

3. Cable tip — dirt and contacts

  • Inspect the plug that goes into the phone: lint, oxidation (green/black spots), bent pins (USB-C).
  • Wipe with a dry cloth; light oxidation sometimes responds to a cloth barely damp with isopropyl alcohol — dry fully before plugging in.
  • If the plug is melted, deformed or smells burnt — discard the cable; it can damage the phone’s port.

4. Cable: bends, frays, heat

  • Check near the plug (daily bend zone): cracked jacket, visible wires, soft “knots”.
  • If the cable gets very hot, sparks, or only charges in one position — stop using it; risk to port and battery.
  • Don’t bend it at 90° in a case / pocket; use a short desk cable if you always break the same spot.
  • Cheap no-name cables can charge slowly or intermittently even on a healthy phone.

5. “Liquid Detected” / wet port

  • Don’t force the cable. Leave the phone dry, port down, for a few hours; try again.
  • If the message returns often or there was liquid contact — see also the “phone after liquid” guide; oxidation can start even while charging still works.

FAQ6
Why only a few seconds of charging?

Usually unstable contact or protection stopping current. Cleaning + another cable helps many cases; if not — shop diagnostics.

Why drain instead of charge?

Cable/charger under-delivers, partial short in port, degraded battery, or high draw on weak charger (PC USB).

Does cleaning the port help?

Yes, often — lint blocks contact. Gentle wood/plastic pick, no sharp metal. If still unstable, port may be worn or corroded.

Any USB-C cable?

For a quick test yes; cheap cables may charge slowly. Use known-good cable + enough wattage for diagnosis.

Wireless works but cable doesn't?

Wireless circuit is separate. Issue is almost certainly port / cable / flex.

When to visit NEXX GSM
  • Port is loose, cable falls out, only one USB-C orientation works.
  • After cleaning it still won’t charge, or the socket area gets very hot.
  • You suspect a short, a drop on the bottom edge, or a liquid history.

We check the port, charging flex, charging IC and battery. Estimate on request; exact cost after inspection.
