1. Identify the password screen
| When you see the password prompt | What it usually means | Right next step |
|---|---|---|
| Before Windows starts | System or Power-on BIOS password | Previous owner, IT or Dell Support — not this service |
| When opening BIOS Setup with F2 | Admin or Setup BIOS password | NEXX Admin checker may apply |
| The screen says HDD, SSD, or Drive Password | Password for the storage drive | Separate drive-password assessment |
| After Windows has loaded | Windows account password or PIN | Use Windows account recovery |
A BIOS password appears before the normal Windows sign-in screen. It may prevent the laptop from starting, changing boot options, or opening BIOS settings.
Dell BIOS password reset tool: what should you check?
A tool that resets BIOS settings or updates firmware is not necessarily a password recovery tool. Before downloading anything, identify whether the screen asks for System, Admin/Setup, a drive password or a Windows login. Do not install unknown “unlockers” or send a stranger remote access just because a search result names your model. See the difference between BIOS recovery and password reset.
Dell Latitude 5400 BIOS password reset: is the model enough?
No. A search such as “Dell Latitude 5400 BIOS password reset 8FC8” combines a model with a code suffix, but neither identifies the full recovery case. On your own laptop, record the exact prompt, whether Windows starts, and the complete System Number if displayed. Do not assume that every Latitude 5400 uses 8FC8 or that every device with that suffix is supported. For a former company laptop, ask the authorised IT administrator first. Check what System Number and Service Tag mean. If your screen ends in -8FC8, use the 8FC8 guide; the complete System Number still has to be checked.
2. What the Dell code on screen means
Some Dell password screens show a code such as XXXXXXX-8FC8. Copy the complete value exactly: the four characters after the dash are the suffix, but the characters before it are also required for the compatibility check. Keep the full code private; do not post it in public forums or open chats.
3. What not to expect
A BIOS password is not the same as a Windows password. Recovering BIOS access does not reset a Windows account.
A drive password is also a separate case. If the screen mentions HDD, SSD, or Drive Password, do not assume the same recovery process applies.
Removing the CMOS battery is not a universal password reset. Dell’s current guidance sends forgotten-password cases on laptops to support; a PSWD jumper is only relevant on desktop models whose exact service manual documents one.
4. Will recovery erase my files?
Recovering Admin BIOS settings access does not itself erase Windows or personal files. The NEXX service does not cover System/startup passwords; a drive password is a separate data-access case.
If you still know the current password
- Start the computer and tap F2 at the Dell logo.
- Open Security or Passwords and select the password you want to remove.
- Enter the current password. Leave both new-password fields blank and confirm each blank field with Enter before applying the change, then save and exit.
Menus vary by model, so use the service manual for your exact computer before changing firmware settings.
If you forgot it or bought the Dell used
- First identify whether the screen says System, Admin/Setup or HDD/SSD. The correct route depends on that wording.
- Copy the complete System Number from the screen, including the suffix after the dash. Do not post the full number publicly.
- Ask the previous owner or authorised IT team to remove the password. If F2 BIOS Setup specifically asks for Admin/Setup, use the compatibility check below; if a System/Power-on password appears before startup, contact Dell Support instead.
A hardware fault is a separate issue and needs its own diagnostics.
When a recovery code may not be available
The suffix alone cannot guarantee a result. Master Password Lockout can disable recovery, and HDD/SSD or some NVMe password cases need a separate assessment.
Common Dell BIOS code suffixes
The supported endings covered by these guides are 8FC8, CF1B, 3FE2, 1B58 and 9ABE. The suffix is only the four characters after the dash—not a password or a support guarantee. Check the complete System Number shown on the device.

FAQ4
Is the Service Tag on the sticker always the code I need?
No. The NEXX GSM checker needs the complete System Number or error code shown on the password screen, not the Service Tag from the sticker.
Can removing the CMOS battery clear a Dell laptop BIOS password?
Do not assume it will. Laptop password handling and desktop jumper procedures are model-specific.
Can recovery be impossible?
Yes. The model, password type, drive and Master Password Lockout setting can prevent a recovery code from being available.
Why does Dell still ask after I removed a known password?
On affected BIOS versions, both empty new-password fields must be confirmed with Enter before applying and saving the change. Menus vary by model.
