System password
A System or power-on password is checked before the operating system starts. It may stop the laptop from booting. This is not the same as a Windows password, PIN or Microsoft account.
Admin or Setup password
An Admin/Setup password protects firmware settings. You may still be able to start Windows, but settings such as boot order, Secure Boot or virtualization can be unavailable until the correct password is entered.
Forgot the Dell Admin password but Windows still starts?
This can happen when only BIOS settings are protected. You do not need a Windows password reset for that symptom. If you know the BIOS Admin password, use the normal password settings and your model’s manual to change it. If it is forgotten, check with the person who configured the laptop, then record the exact Setup prompt and any displayed System Number. Do not change Secure Boot, storage mode or TPM settings while investigating the password: those changes are not a password reset and can affect startup or encrypted data access.
HDD or SSD password
A drive password protects the storage device rather than Windows sign-in or BIOS settings. Treat it as a separate data-access case. A release route is not available for every drive; Dell states that it cannot create password release codes for NVMe SSDs.
Windows sign-in and BitLocker are separate
A Windows password or PIN controls operating-system sign-in. BitLocker encrypts a Windows volume and its blue recovery screen asks for a 48-digit key. Neither credential is a Dell System, Admin or HDD/SSD password. Use the owner’s account or organization route.
What information to collect
- The exact wording of the prompt.
- Whether it appears at power-on, only in F2 Setup, or names a drive.
- The full on-screen error or system code, including the suffix after the dash.
- The Service Tag for device identification; keep device codes and credentials private.
Recovery limits and safe next steps
If the password is known, change or remove it through F2 BIOS Setup. If it is forgotten, identify the exact prompt and keep the complete code private. When Master Password Lockout was enabled before the loss, recovery-password support is disabled and recovery can be unavailable; motherboard or locked-drive replacement may be the remaining repair option. Dell also does not issue release codes for NVMe SSD passwords.

FAQ3
Is the Dell Admin password the same as the System password?
No. Admin/Setup protects BIOS settings; System password can stop the computer from booting.
Is an HDD/SSD password covered by the same service?
No. Drive passwords are excluded from this Admin BIOS service and require a separate data-access path.
Why does F2 ask for an admin password while Windows works?
The BIOS Admin/Setup password can protect settings without blocking Windows startup. It is separate from the Windows administrator account.
