If your Dell shows “This computer system is protected by a password authentication system” before Windows, start by identifying the password prompt. The heading “Dell Security Manager” alone does not tell you whether the lock protects startup, BIOS settings or a drive.
Match the words on your screen
| Screen text or situation | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Enter System Password / System Password | If this stops startup before Windows, check the System BIOS password. |
| Please type in the system or administrator password | Record the complete message and any System Number displayed beside it. |
| Admin Password / Administrator Password / Unlock Setup in F2 | This can protect BIOS settings even when Windows still starts. |
| HDD / SSD / Hard Drive Password | A drive lock is a separate case; do not order a System/Admin key for it. |
| Windows PIN or BitLocker recovery | Use account recovery or the BitLocker key, not a BIOS password service. |
Read the whole message, including the line above the password field. A logo, screen colour or laptop model is not enough to choose a recovery method. Wording and menu layout vary between Dell generations.
Is it asking for a standard Dell password?
There is no shared factory password for every Dell laptop. A System or Admin password may have been set by you, a previous owner or an IT team. “Admin” is the name of a password type, not a suggestion to type admin. If you recognise the password, use it; otherwise avoid trying lists of guessed passwords.
Where to find the information for a check
- Note when the prompt appears: immediately after power-on, inside F2 Setup or after Windows loads.
- Read the label and copy the full System Number if the screen displays one, including the ending after the dash.
- Keep a photo for a private support conversation. Do not post the full device number in public comments.
Do not build a code from the model name or the Service Tag sticker. If no System Number is visible, send the screen wording and model privately for assessment. Do not add 8FC8 or any other suffix yourself, and do not repeatedly enter wrong passwords just to imitate a screenshot.
Does the Dell model change the answer?
Latitude, Inspiron, Vostro, XPS and Precision models can have different menus and security settings. For example, “Dell Latitude 5400 administrator password” identifies a model and a symptom, but not a recovery password. Use the exact model when reading its manual; use the actual password screen when checking recovery options. A model name does not prove that a key is available.
What to do before ordering a recovery password
On a recently purchased used laptop, ask the seller whether they can remove the password. For a managed work device, contact the responsible IT team. If you know the current password, the normal BIOS settings may let you change it. Removing a CMOS battery or reinstalling Windows is not a general solution to a forgotten Dell laptop firmware password. Master Password Lockout can also prevent recovery-code support.
Still at a Dell System or Admin password screen?
Enter the complete on-screen code in the NEXX GSM checker. It checks the code format and shows the available option and price. Continue to a recovery-password order only if your password type matches; a recognised suffix alone does not guarantee success for every device configuration.

FAQ
Does Dell Security Manager mean my Windows password is wrong?
Not necessarily. A prompt before Windows or inside BIOS usually concerns firmware or drive security. A Windows account password and PIN have a separate recovery path.
I only know my Dell model. Can I get a password from that?
No. The model helps identify the manual, but recovery assessment needs the password type and any complete code displayed on that device.
There is no 8FC8 on the screen. Is this guide still relevant?
Yes. Identify the screen first. It may show a different suffix or no code at all; do not invent a code or substitute an ending.
