What to ask the seller to show
Dell Admin or System password: which one is the screen asking for?
- A start from a fully shut-down state, not only a desktop that is already open. Note any password requested before Windows.
- Access to F2 Setup and the displayed Admin/System password status, where available. Do not change settings or create a new password just to test the laptop.
- The exact model and Service Tag matching the sale document. Keep full identifiers private rather than posting them in public comments.
- Any organization-managed setup or sign-in screen. Ask the seller how the previous organization will complete the handover.
Already bought it and found a password?
Keep the listing, invoice and correspondence. Record the exact prompt and when it appears, then contact the seller before paying for another service. Ask them to resolve the restriction or agree on the next step. Do not assume that an Admin recovery offer also covers a startup password or previous owner’s files.
Ownership paperwork and password recovery are separate
Dell provides a warranty and ownership-transfer process for eligible third-party purchases; it can require previous-owner details or proof of purchase. A transfer is not a BIOS reset. Dell Support may also request ownership evidence when handling a forgotten password. Have the seller or former company IT team help with missing records.
Do not confuse BIOS with Windows or company enrollment
An Admin password concerns BIOS settings. A System password concerns startup; a drive password or BitLocker concerns storage access. A Windows account or organization-enrollment prompt needs a different route. NEXX’s Admin service does not remove Intune/Autopilot registration, transfer accounts or provide access to another person’s data. Reinstalling Windows is not a reliable handover check.
Only check the code for the password actually shown
Once ownership or written permission is clear, a supported Admin/Setup screen code can be checked online. Enter the complete on-screen code, your name and delivery email; checking is free. The result shows the recognized format and offer, not a device inspection or guaranteed recovery. If the screen type is uncertain, ask for help before ordering. Do not buy based only on a model name, suffix or someone else’s successful order.

FAQ3
Is a photo of a working Windows desktop enough?
No. Ask for a startup and BIOS-access demonstration on the actual device. A desktop photo cannot show every restriction.
Does a Dell ownership transfer remove passwords?
No. Ownership records and password recovery are separate processes. Ask Dell which documents and next steps apply to the device.
Should I pay for Admin recovery before contacting the seller?
Contact the seller first when a restriction was not disclosed. Identify the password type and ownership situation before considering a separate service.
