Dell 1B58 BIOS password recovery: Admin settings or another prompt?

Dell System/Admin BIOS password recovery is available for complete codes ending in 1B58. Before using it, work out what the password is protecting. A laptop that starts Windows but restricts F2 settings can present a different symptom from one that stops before boot, even though both may concern firmware credentials.

Admin/Setup and System are not the same symptom

An Admin or Administrator password can protect changes inside BIOS Setup while the operating system still starts. A System password can be requested during the pre-boot sequence. Wording and menu layout vary, so record the exact label rather than relying on memory. For this service, the relevant screen must also show a complete System Number ending in 1B58. The suffix alone, the model, or a Service Tag copied from the case cannot identify the recovery password.

Classify the prompt before ordering

1. If Windows starts normally, open only the usual setup path and note whether F2 asks for Admin/Administrator or Unlock Setup credentials.
2. If boot stops earlier, record whether the screen explicitly requests a System password and copy its full System Number.
3. Do not change Secure Boot, TPM or storage-mode settings while investigating; those changes are not a password reset and can affect startup or encrypted data.
4. If the screen names HDD, SSD or Hard Drive, or shows a BitLocker key field or Windows sign-in, use the recovery path for that prompt instead.

Use the complete 1B58 System Number

BIOS password recovery is not firmware recovery

A Dell BIOS Admin/Setup credential is separate from a Windows administrator account, even when both use the word “administrator.” A BIOS System password is also different from BitLocker encryption and an HDD/SSD password. Reinstalling Windows is not a method for clearing the firmware credential, and a 1B58 recovery password does not decrypt storage or remove organizational management. If you cannot confidently classify the prompt, ask for a private screen check before checkout.
